GUARDIAN, 2023

spray paint, assemblage- satellite dish, palm fronds, dried flowers

“The road shall never swallow you. The river of your destiny will always overcome evil. May you understand your fate. Suffering will never destroy you but will make you stronger, success will never confuse your scatter your spirit but will make you fly higher into the good sunlight. Your life will always surprise you”

This piece, GUARDIAN is inspired by the above prayer of passage found in “The Famished Road” by Ben Okri. It embodies safety and protection, a guardian totem transporting our wishes, dreams, and intentions in both the physical and spiritual realms. A steward of the journey of life, exploring, deciphering, and granting knowledge of the flux between the divine and the mundane.

I am very attracted to the continuous exploration of objects in the way that they hold, transmit, and transform energy. This sculpture took about 10 months to be completed- The satellite dish came affixed to the wall of our studio space and I could never get rid of it so I stayed committed to the ways in which I could transform it into something more. I constructed this assemblage sculpture using a satellite dish, some palm fronds that I repurposed from a party, and dried flowers from FLOWER WALL! no.1- resulting in a form that is quite bold yet endearing.

I also self-generated some sounds by using the palm fronds to sweep the floor, layered over mind-blending gloops of the talking drum and the soul worship rhythms of the tambourine- to immerse the viewer in the meditative nature of the guardian’s life and journey.

I’m delighted to have arrived here, in the practice of practicing everything that is within me, I created my first site-specific work that confidently holds all the creative energy that I find and express in my more traditional works.
