3 works for 3 mothers #2 / fatimoh, 2023

acrylic and soft pastel on canvas

30” x 30”

For Fatimoh, I wanted to create something that read age, wisdom, motherhood, and sacrifice- Fatimoh visited her sister in the US when I was about 3 or 4 years, and although I was not around then- I know her decision to remain in the US to provide for her 3 children in Nigeria was not an easy one. Fatimoh worked tirelessly to earn enough to stay afloat and still send money back home for the provision and education of myself and my 2 siblings also funding the well-being of extended family members- I SAW IT! I was there.

Knowing Fatimoh means knowing she was my first hero, someone who withstood no matter the weather or condition, someone who cares about her family and shows love, care, and nurture in a way that is unique to her. Knowing Fatimoh is knowing all her “WHY’S” and learning to receive all of it with love and good intention. Knowing Fatimoh means understanding that I wouldn’t be anywhere close to who I am today without her and I wanted to use this work to honor her- in full glory. I am continuously proud of the ways that she strives to lead with love- I can truly say that my mother is living proof that as long as you are alive, you are always capable of redefining your existence.

Throughout my life, I have always shared my dreams with her- when I wanted to be a pharmacist when I was an environmental researcher and now it is such a blessing to share this moment together as an artist!  Every day I carry Fatimoh’s dreams alive- because I know she loves me!
